Only In Canada

2019 Aug 31st

We all know that “The Great White North” is magical, mystical, friendly, honest, amazing, and so much more; so why not write about some of it! There are so many websites dedicated to our great country, and the different and unique offerings we have.  And while exploring the supernatural, enchanted, and whimsical places in Canada, thirst and hunger will come along sooner or later.  Only in Canada can you find these kinds of adventures. Starting with a few different styles of fun that include a fish’s butt and a mummified toe lead into Canada’s creativity.  If you happen to make it up to Dawson City in the Yukon, try the “Sour Toe Cocktail”.  Over 60,000 people have tried this drink.  The mummified toe is placed in the drink of your choice.  The saying is “You can drink it fast; you can drink it slow- but the lips have gotta touch the toe.” The first toe was of Louis Liken in the 20s.  In 1973, Dick Stevenson found it cleaning a cabin, and dared those to have it in their drink at the Sourdough Saloon.  Now, on over their 10th toe (via donations), the drink keeps Canada truly unique.  After a guy swallowed it purposely and paid the $500 fine back in 2013, the fine has now increased to $2,500! The second fun Canadian thing to do is kiss a Cod’s butt. In St. John’s Newfoundland, kissing a cod’s butt will make you a true Newfie!  Drinking screech will really make ya feel Canadian!  Screech is certainly some sturdy rum. Trading rum with the Jamaicans for fish way back in the day created a Newfoundland staple.  Story goes, an American Serviceman in WWII slammed a bit much too quick and yelled strangely.  This created a laugh among the locals, and the name screech for this hi-octane rum was formed. Cod in Newfoundland Needless to say, these two examples of different occurrences in Canada are alcohol driven.  So, from our Mercer Mojito Muddler to make a crazy strong screech-laden mojito, to the Icy-Rox Stainless Steel Whisky Stones to keep any cocktail cold, Williams Food Equipment has what you need! Glasses, bar cleaners, and steady pouring devices are all on our website.  We love the BMM products to set up your bar beautifully! Bar Set in Canada With water being so prevalent in Canada, unique situations can occur.  And Canadians make the most of it!  In Nova Scotia, and the Bay of Fundy, tides rise the highest in the world.  Over 50 feet as the ebb and flow of the Atlantic streams into the bay.  This leads to the perfect opportunity for a race!  The Not Since Moses Race has been going on for years.  You just missed it on Aug 4th…Don’t worry, 2020 will be just as fun! BBQ At the Bay of Fundy! After, food is served!  Setting up the BBQ on top of the bluffs to serve friends, family and runners alike is easily accomplished with the aid of Williams Food Equipment.  Whether you are an avid BBQ fan who wants to start their own BBQ Team, to a few friends using coals and a cast-iron grill pan, we have you covered!  Eating outdoors is one of our passions and specialties. Staying with the water theme, Canada has two more fun and unique experiences we love!  Snorkeling on the Campbell River in British Columbia with the spawning salmon is a spectacle to be seen.  September is the best time to go! And, cooking and eating salmon is always a pleasure. We all know winter is around the corner…When the freeze hits, time for the Earth’s biggest winter festival in Quebec!  Rafting down the St. Lawrence River while frozen over is a one of a kind experience!  And ice fishing for pickerel, walleye, and perch is another great pastime we love to do here in Canada.  Catching trout in the deep snow can be accomplished here in the Great White North as well!  And, as always, WFE has all the seafood equipment needed for your feast. Lastly, Canada has many cool buildings.  Winnipeg’s Legislature building comes to mind.  “The Pool of the Black Star” is a strange name due to its Freemason history.  The Diefenbunker buried deep in the countryside of Ontario is a super cool place to visit.  The Hotel de Glace in Quebec is an icy hotel that lasts only four months.  And, to avoid the cold, check out The Shameful Tiki Room in Vancouver to feel a tropical vibe all year around. Speaking of Tiki’s and Polynesian décor, the food is incredible on the islands.  To replicate a Hawaiian vacation at home in Canada is easier than one thinks. Just break out the slow cooker to feel the tropical warmth of Polynesia.  Here is an easy Hawaiian chicken recipe to make and serve during your NHL Sunday party. Canadian Chicken Sandwich Hawaiian Chicken Sandwiches Ingredients 1 lb. each boneless, skinless chicken thighs and breasts ¼ cup quality sodium soy sauce ¼ cup pineapple juice 1/3 cups BBQ sauce 2 tablespoons honey 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons molasses 1 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon crushed red chili ½ teaspoon Chinese 5 spice ¼ teaspoon salt Directions Super easy!  Simply mix all the ingredients (minus the chicken) in a bowl.  Place the chicken in a Breville Slow Cooker with Easy Sear.  Pour the sauce over the chicken.  Set on low for five hours.  Once cooked to 165 degrees, shred the chicken with Outset Meat Shredders.  Place the shredded chicken back in the slow cooker to absorb the flavors.  Toast hamburger buns in an All-Clad Digital Toaster Oven.  Pile on the chicken with the condiments of your choice.  Swiss cheese, tomato, cabbage & avocado are must-haves for us on this delectable sandwich! As you can see, Canada is a truly magical country!  Enjoy exploring this wonderful land, and all the unique experiences Canada has to offer.  Have fun cooking and dining while out and about. Whichever season it is, only in Canada will you find crazy, cool, unique, and unusual encounters like no other!
